George Alwanga is an Alumni of the University of Nairobi. He holds a Bachelors degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.
Mr. Alwanga didn’t have a football background growing up though he used to watch the football seasons. When American football was launched at the university of Nairobi by Tom Kelly a Gridiron diplomat and a coach, George was nominated to head the team because of the knowledge he had about the American Football and his ability for leadership. Under his stewardship the team won the first tournament in Makerere.
After the tournament, he used youtube videos and tutorials to learn more about the sport and taught other students on the team the basics. This qualified him as the team captain, coach and the official. Through his passion and enthusiasm he recruited more players for competitive reasons and went further to introduce the sport to other Universities in kenya(Jomo kenyatta university, Buruburu institute of fine Arts and samburu east.)
In July 2015 he was nominated by International Federation of American football (IFAF) for officials training program in canton Ohio, USA during the senior world championship games. He was trained on football rules, mechanics pre and post game review analysis. This has give him a platform to officiate college and international games not only in Kenya but in Africa as a junior official.
Mr. Alwanga in now training a group of 10 who where interested in coaching and officiating with the help of USA football. In addition he is committed to see the sport hold a competitive league for universities and high schools.
He his also the founder of Kenya Federation of American football (KFAF) and serves as the chairman.
